Welcome

I am Jonathan Hollway, someone who is trying to strike a balance between living in society and getting along without it. Through this webpage I hope to share with you my journeys into the woods and into myself. Living in an age where every second of our lives is published online, I believe that we spend too much time worrying about how our lives look like when documented in social media or captured on camera. I therefore struggle to find the balance of sharing my adventures and living them. Rather than being a static record of where I’ve been and what I’ve done, it is my intention that this website become a source of inspiration for future adventures.

  1. Wow! Great site. Loking forward to “following” your travel adventure. Good Luck Jim and Jane Stephenson

  2. Hey you,
    I “talked” to your Dad today (emailed actually) about the North Shore portion of your trip. We will likely be away when you come through here, but I am happy to support your trip in whatever way possible. Recognizing that there are only 5 more sleeps ’til you head out, and it may be best to chat on the phone (I promise to keep it brief) so give us a call to let me know how we can help out (you are welcome to our house/shower/laundry etc). Or email…address attached.
    Wishing you glorious sun, gentle breeze and great adventure!

  3. Hi Jonathan, it’s Nan in Marathon. I too would love to see you when passing through–we are around–and can offer an indoor bed and shower if you so wish. If not, Marathon to Wawa is my favourite coastal paddle in the world, so glad you are making it happen for yourself, ENJOY!

  4. Wow..what a journey! Good luck, be safe and enjoy yourself! I shall be watching your progress. Pete, Fredericton NB.on the St John river

  5. What an amazing trip ahead! We’ll keep an eye out for you in Collingwood (on Georgian Bay)! Safe paddling!

  6. Have a great trip and don’t push your Dad too hard when he joins you!!!!! Looking forward to checking up on you each day. Love ya, Aunt Eydie

  7. Wow, what a great way to rediscover you. We often wondered what became of you once you left Marathon. Seems things just got better and better. We would love to see you when you come to town. We are in T-bay on the 17th but hope to be back on the 18th. If it fits with your schedule, perhaps we can connect and maybe even spend a day paddling with you down the coast (where are you planning to camp that night (18th or 19th).

  8. Jonathan;
    Best wishes for a safe and rewarding trip – especially along the Superior coast which is very scenic. But it may well be the most challenging leg of the voyage too. If you are looking for a rest spot in the Soo we would love to be the host – be it for one night or two. As cyclists, we routinely host cross country cyclists (warmshowers.org) but we are are also kayakers and would welcome you. We have kayaked in the Great Lakes, Lower St. Lawrence and yes, Bay of Fundy.
    We are equipped to transport you (and as many as 3 friends) plus 4 boats from the St. Marys River to our house and back to the water as need be. We have plenty of room and lots of food.

  9. We look forward to experiencing your adventure vicariously! Most of all, paddle safely and we’ll see at home.

  10. It sounds like your journey is going well. My wife and I are a couple weeks behind you. We have met a few people that met you along superior including Ted in Silver Islet. We are in Mattawa now headed down the Ottawa. Never been down the Ottawa before, any suggestions for negotiating the middle channel or other rapids? Did you follow the portage routes around the dam suggested by Ontario hydro? Some do them see pretty long.

    Hope things continue to go well for you.

    When are you planning to reachSt. John? We are planning to pass through there around the end of August. if you are still there maybe can meetup.
